Metallirating:

“Hunkle down, keep your eyes fixed ahead, and run like hell.” – Paul Spangler, advice to Sister Marion Irvine before a race. Spangler set 85 National age group records prior to his death at 95.

“If the Lord had meant for man to run, he’d have given him four legs or at least, made him late for a bus.” – Red Smith, sportswriter.

“When I was 14 or 15, my brother tried to encourage me by giving me a pair of running shoes. But I threw them away because I was so used to running with bare feet and they were too heavy.” – Haile Gebrselassie, Ethiopian distance great.

“At our East German youth festivals one year, I won 10 gold medals and one silver. And my father was angry about the silver” – Uta Pippig

“He was too small for football and he got tired of sitting on the bench all the time” – Ray Prefontaine, on how his son Steve got started to running.

“If you come to think of it, you never see deer, dogs and rabbits worrying about their menus and yet they run much faster than humans” – Emil Zatopek

“If you run a hundred miles a week, you can eat anything you want- Why? Because (a) you’ll burn all the calories you consume, (b) you deserve it, and (c) you’ll be injured soon and back on restricted diet anyway.” – Don Kardong

“Only think of two things – the report of the pistol and the tape. When you hear the one, you run like hell till you break the other.” – Sam Mussabini, final advice to Harold Abrahams prior to 100 meters in Paris, 1924

“It is not gymnastics or ice skating, you know.” – Emil Zatopek, when cuestioned about his agonized expression while racing

“Run like hell and get the agony over with.” – Clarence DeMar

“People don’t realize that Mexicans, not Africans, are the dominant road runners today.” – Salvador García, after winning the 1991 New York City Marathon

“Marathoning is just another form of insanity.” – John J. Kelley, winner of the 1952 Boston Marathon

“Run hard, be strong, think big!” - Percy Cerutty

“A runner must run with dreams in his heart, not money in his pocket” – Emil Zatopek

Genial, ¿no?
